Manchester United Football Club is an English professional football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester. The club currently plays in the Premier League, of which it was a founding member in 1992, and has competed in the UEFA Champions League every year since the 1996–97 season. Founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878, the club changed its name after coming close to bankruptcy in 1902, ten years after joining The Football League and six years before its first league title. In 1909, the club moved to its current home, Old Trafford, the third-largest football ground in the United Kingdom.

In 1968, under the management of Matt Busby, Manchester United was the first English football club to win the European Cup, just 10 years after the Munich air disaster that claimed the lives of eight of its players. Alex Ferguson is the most successful manager in the club's history, having won 26 major honours since he took over in November 1986. The club is unique in having won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League in a single season, a feat known as The Treble, doing so in 1998–99.

Having won a joint-record 18 league titles, four League Cups and a record 11 FA Cups, Manchester United is one of the most successful clubs in the history of English football and one of the wealthiest and most widely supported football teams in the world. After being floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1991, the club was purchased by the Glazer family in May 2005 in a deal valuing the club at almost £800 million.

With anywhere between 75 and 333 million supporters worldwide, Manchester United is a global brand valued by Forbes magazine at $285 million. The club is currently third, behind Real Madrid and Barcelona, in the Deloitte Football Money League, but were it not for the depreciation of the pound sterling against the euro, Manchester United would have the highest revenue of any football club worldwide. The club is said to be worth £1.19 billion, making it the most valuable football club in the world
